Prince Charles Comets ran the table in winning their senior boys’ home basketball tournament Jan. 6 and 7 in Creston.
The Comets trounced Mt. Baker Wild 69-52 in the final – their second victory of the weekend over the Cranbrook school – to finish first in the seven-team event.
They’ve now reached the final in each of their first two tournaments so far in the 2016-17 season.
PCSS led wire to wire, with quarter scores of 18-6, 29-23 and 50-36.
Jacob Dumas netted seven of his game-high 23 points in a critical third quarter when the Comets stretched their narrow halftime edge to a more comfortable margin. Davis Nelson added 18 points, all but two of them coming in the second half.
PCSS opened the event against the same Wild team and with a similar result, a 59-40 victory.
A quick start propelled Creston to an early 16-2 advantage in the first quarter, with the teams trading baskets the rest of the way.
Dumas had 20 points to lead PCSS, with Nelson and Mark Armstrong adding 12 apiece and Marcus Bell chipping in five points, all in a third quarter after which the home side led 45-29.
That put the Comets into the semifinals where they had their hands full with the Stanley Humphries Rockers of Castlegar, at least for one half.
The Rockers erased what had been an early 6-0 deficit by hitting three consecutive three-point field goals in one stretch and dominating the boards to take a 29-27 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
But PCSS came out fired up for the second half, scoring the first 10 points and establishing control 59-42 after three quarters en route to a 79-49 triumph.
Dumas put up 43 points, Nelson 14 and Armstrong an even dozen, with Bryce Bergman adding four points.
