The Vernon Canadians went 1-3 at the B.C. Pee Wee A Baseball Championships at Edith Gay Park in Rutland last weekend.
Coached by Kevin Porteous, Carl Vardon and Mike Sawka, the C’s opened by falling 11-0 to the Victoria Wildcats.
Jacob Soucy, who pitched three innings and smacked a double and single, was named Vernon’s game MVP. Bailey Wellman singled to right and swiped second and third bases, while Corey Anderson singled and stole one base.
Vernon then outlasted the Prince George Knights 18-17 behind some stellar pitching, defence and offence from MVP Wellman.
After Shaughnessy Barker made a great catch in centre field, Wellman knocked a ball down on the hill and threw to Hayden Vardon at first for the second out of the first inning. She then whiffed a batter for the final out.
Soucy drilled an over-the-fence three-run homer to put the C’s up 4-0 in the second inning. Isaac Olson fanned four batters before giving the ball to Graham Moss with one out in the fifth.
Wellman singled in Vardon, Corey Anderson drove in Moss, Wellman stole home and Zach Orchard singled in Olson, in the fifth.
Moss struck out four batters in the fifth and sixth, while Soucy tripled and scored on a double by Shelby Porteous and Moss knocked in Vardon, in the sixth.
Vardon fanned the final out of the seventh as Prince George scored six times to tie things up at 17-17.
Olson singled and swiped second and third to get Vernon moving in the bottom of the seventh. Dakota Becker nailed a double to left field, scoring Olson.
The Canadians then lost 21-17 to the Victoria Tigers with Vardon selected game MVP.
Olson, who doubled and scored on a Becker single in the second, hit a two-run double in a six-run fourth. Orchard rapped a two-run single and later swiped home, while Becker also stole home.
Down 16-8 in the top of the fifth, Vardon walked to load the bases and Moss followed with a walk to score Barker.
Anderson singled to centre to drive in Sawka and Vardon, while Wellman smoked a double to centre to bring in Moss and Anderson.
Becker hit a line-drive double to left in the sixth after Orchard singled. Catcher Noah Foufoulas, who was a wall defensively, drove in Orchard and Sawka grounded out to bring in Becker.
Porteous and Vardon both stole home in the seventh inning to make it close.
The C’s finished the tournament by losing 15-2 to the Cloverdale Spurs with Foufoulas taking MVP.
