Peewee A Thunder capture Island banner

Cowichan headed to Fort St. John for provincials

The Cowichan Thunder are carrying the Island banner into the provincial lacrosse championships this week after edging Juan de Fuca in the title game last Wednesday.

Having already secured a berth at provincials as one of the top two Island teams, Cowichan got by JDF 3-2 in the Island final at the Q Centre.

Cowichan captain Logan Olson executed a perfect pick and roll to open the scoring, setting the tone for the hard-fought game.

“The team dug deep and worked hard to win the banner,” head coach Chris Claxton said. “For a bunch of the boys, it was their first opportunity to play in an Island championship.”

Carter Beal was outstanding on loose balls, emblematic of the Thunder’s hard-working attitude. A few things still need work, however, according to Claxton.

“Our power play was stagnant, so if we want to get the gold at provincials we need to capitalize on the man advantage,” the coach said.

The team headed north to Fort St. John for the provincial championships, which started on Thursday.

“The goal all season was to win the league and win at provincials so we will see what happens this weekend,” Claxton said. “We are undefeated in 10 games and hope to carry that momentum into Thursday’s game.”
