Peewee hockey fun

Peewee house league teams from Williams Lake, Prince George and Mackenzie and Quesnel played their hearts out at Twin Arenas last weekend.

They came with their hockey gear and parents in tow and left with smiles broadened by memories of a weekend playing hockey.

Six peewee house league teams from Williams Lake, Prince George and Mackenzie, made their way to Twin Arenas last weekend at the invite of four Quesnel house league peewee teams.

In the gold-medal match, the Mackenzie Knights skated to an 11-2 win over the green-jerseyed Quesnel team and in the bronze-medal game, the orange-jerseyed Quesnel team outpaced a team from Prince George 8-1.

Finishing in fifth place was the black-jerseyed team from Quesnel.

Friday evening, Team Black faced Team Orange in rink two at Twin Arenas.

After a scoreless first period, Orange tallied for two goals in the second period, then added three more in the third period before Black scored with little time on the clock to break the shutout for Orange netminder Brady Beaudry.

Orange held on for the final moments to record the 5-1 win.

Ben Blacklaw, coach for Team Orange, wasn’t surprised with the late jump his team got, although he did admit they played a little lazy in the first two periods.

“We always come from behind,” Blacklaw said.

“We had some better passing in the third period.”

Black redeemed themselves Saturday afternoon with an 11-5 win against the Yellow Snow from Williams Lake thanks to some nice passing and strong goaltending from Ty Watson.

Leading the way on the scoresheet for Quesnel was Chance Wilde who scored in the first, second and third periods for the hat trick.

Of the three, Wilde said the last goal, an end-to-end rush was his favourite.

“I just skated behind our net and decided to go for it,” he said.

Once in front of the Williams Lake goalie, Wilde deked to his backhand for the flip over the pads.

For Dave Spitzer, coach for Team Black, the win was the result of team work and passing, something they had not done the day before against Team Orange.

In that respect, Spitzer named Logan Petrinas the game’s MVP.

“He played a very unselfish game,” Spitzer said.

“He thought about his teammates before himself.”

Rounding out the standing were the Williams Lake Silverbacks in sixth place, the Yellow Snow from Williams Lake in seventh place, Team Yellow from Quesnel in eighth place, the Williams Lake Green in ninth place and a second team from Prince George in 10th place.

Sponsors for the Quesnel teams included Canadian Tire, Ultimate Trophies, Fountain Tire and Inwood Trucking.
