Peewee hockey girls close out season

Sooke’s Peewee Girls team finished off its regular season with a fourth place finish leading to a match up against Victoria – the league’s undefeated first place team.

The girls, led by head coach Julie Lafontaine were ready to play hard and the play was back and forth to start the first. Great defensive effort from Victoria Sutherland and Emma Frisch helped get the puck out of our end. Just before the five minute mark of the first, Alison Sudlow won a faceoff and connected with Erica Pierce who scored to put Sooke up 1-0. Victoria answered less than a minute later. Sooke came on strong with great offense from Kaitlin McKelvey and Desiree Cumming. The duo of Sudlow-Pierce scored again to put Sooke back on top. Sooke finished off the first with a long cross ice pass from Jasmine Kumar to Hailey Dimock to put Sooke up by a two-goal margin.

In the second, Dimock returned the favour with an assist to Jasmine Kumar who scored after a goalmouth scramble.

A third period highlight came when Sooke was able to fend off a long two-player advantage from Victoria. Sooke’s goalie, Tanya Fogarty had an outstanding game to lead the team to a 4-1 win. The victory set them up to face Campbell River in the Sunday final. Campbell River got an early two-goal lead. Sooke had chances from forwards Kailee Purnell, Hailey Dimock and Alison Sudlow but couldn’t connect in the second.  Sooke missed the presence of injured defensive dynamo Kiara Taylor, but was grateful for Atom call-up Morgan Couture who put Sooke on the board with a goal early in the third, assisted by Hailey Dimock.

Time ran out for Sooke and the final score was 4-1. Despite the loss, the parents were proud of their players for their second place finish and an exceptional season of great hockey.
