The Saanich Tigers A2 peewee box lacrosse team ended a strong year with a silver medal at the B.C. championships in Richmond on July 24.

During the provincials the Tigers went undefeated in pool play, beating North Shore 9-2, Surrey 8-4 and Kelowna 10-0. The Tigers then defeated Port Moody 13-5 in the semifinal to advance to the gold medal game, where they lost in the last minute to the Surrey Rebels, 5-4.

Hayden Black stood out in net for the Tigers, posting a stingy tournament goals against average of 3.00.

With the loss the Tigers finished the season with a record of 9-6-1.

“It was a year where everyone truly contributed and played unselfishly for each other,” said team spokesperson Darren Vaux.

Adam Gow coached the team and was named the most sportsman-like coach for the provincials.

During the year the Tigers finished first in league play, swept the Peninsula Warriors in two straight playoff games (5-4 in OT and 8-6), and lost to Cowichan in the one-game Island final 8-3. The Tigers also won gold at the Alan Price Memorial Tournament in Kamloops, gold at Juan de Fuca’s Captain Cook tourney, and bronze at the Pop Styles tournament in Port Coquitlam.
