The Booster Juice Peewee B Tyees returned to Port Hardy for a rematch with the Tri-Port Eagles over the weekend.
The game was very spirited and picked up where the previous weekend’s matchup had ended with very physical play being brought to the Tyees by the hometown Eagles. The Tyees maintained their focus and played very disciplined hockey, sticking to the gameplan laid out by head coach Bob Holt, which kept the team from getting drawn into any penalty trouble early on.
Leading the way was goaltender Dominick Bellefleur making several key saves with back up from solid defensive players Steven Sauer, Troy Macdonald and Brady Kratzmann. This defensive play gave the Tyees the early momentum, resulting in the Tyees dominating the shots on goal and forcing the Eagle’s netminder to come up with a number of big saves.
Eventually the Tyees solved the goaltending mystery when Jacob Hartley potted the game’s first goal after stealing the puck off of an Eagle defenceman deep in their end. The Tyees then got another unassisted goal from Daniel Gilson building a 2-0 lead early into the second period. Less than a minute later, Tri-Port stormed back and brought themselves within one.
The Tyees responded with quick shifts and some heads up passing opening up the ice for Ben Wellman to wire one past the Tri-Port netminder from the high slot regaining the two goal lead for the Tyees.
The game remained close until the 10 minute mark of the third period when Jacob Hartley scored his second, a shorthanded goal, while the Tyees were killing off an Eagles two-man advantage by taking a beautiful breakout pass from Brayden Davidsen, splitting the Eagles defence and sniping one past the Eagles’ netminder. The Tyees would add one more and come home with a convincing 5-2 win.
The Booster Juice Peewee B Tyees begin their regular season play in Division 3 of Island League play set to kick off this weekend.
