Peewees ready for Tier 2 playoffs

Minor hockey action continues as the season rapidly heads towards its climax

Oceanside’s upstart squad of peewee A’s came up just short of their bid to win their league’s North Island title, but last Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Powell River Kings sets them up nicely for the start of their four-team Tier 2 Island playdowns this weekend.

As reported last week, the young Generals had already secured themselves a spot in the Island fianls by way of back-to-back upset wins over teams ahead of them in the standings, and took to the ice at Howie Meeker Arena Sunday with first in the North on the line.

Isaac Liek, Grayson Weme and Isaac Larocque scored for Oceanside in that one.

“We didn’t get the lucky breaks, but we were all over (Powell River),” Peewee A coach Rob Noviello said after, adding “we won the game on the ice — we outplayed, out-skated and out-hit them, we just didn’t win on the scoreboard. It was unfortunate, but that’s okay; they played with a lot of heart, with a passion to win,” said their coach. “It’s encouraging.”

GAME ON — The Peewee A Generals open their four-team Island finals this weekend at a down-Island location yet to be named against perennial powerhouse Juan de Fuca.
