NORTH SAANICH — Peninsula Minor Hockey’s Midget A team swept their Cowichan Valley counterparts in a best of three series to punch their ticket to the provincial championships this month.

On March 4 and 5, the Midget Eagles downed Cowichan Valley 4-3 and 3-1, respectively, to take the Tier 2 Island League final.

“I think a very key part of the story is that our coaches are young guys in their late to mid 20s who themselves were Peninsula Minor Hockey players back in 2004 and 2005 — which was also the last two times a Peninsula Eagles team won the Island Championships,” said Head Coach and Parent in Charge Paul Warmenhoven.

He added their players had help from the Junior B Peninsula Panthers, who had them out for practices during the season.

The Eagles travel to Port Coquitlam March 18 to 24 for the provincials. Warmenhoven noted that no Peninsula team has won that event, “and this squad is hoping to change that.”
