Penticton female Vees lose close battle to Cranbrook

The Penticton Vees are now 0-2 in the midget female provincial championships after a 1-0 loss to the Kootenay Nitros Tuesday night. Wasyn Rice scored the winner for the Nitros at 10:36 of the first period. The Nitros played a physical game, but Penticton showed they were up for the challenge. In goal for the Vees was McKenna Nelson, who was solid in goal.

In the Vees’ opener Terrace spoiled the opening ceremony game on Monday.

Terrace edged Penticton 2-1 on goals by Chloe Allison and Bailey Kasum. Kasum netted the winner on a breakaway at 8:33 of the third when she beat Fairth Stark on the glove side.

Penticton opened the scoring when captain Amy Main finished off a play set up by Cedar Carter at 13:27 of the first period.

Stark and Terrace goalie Malerie Kelly had strong performances. Both teams also played disciplined games as only two penalties were handed out.

Surrey has a 2-0 record with wins over Williams Lake and Kamloops. Richmond is also undefeated at 2-0 with wins over Cranbrook and Terrace. The Kamloops Mystix, the champions of the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association are winless after two games. They were shutout by the North Island Midget Impact 3-0.

The Vees conclude the round robin portion of the tournament against the Richmond Ravens at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena.

In other provincial action the Sherwood Trophy Vees are 2-0 at the peewee Tier 2 tournament in Prince George. The Vees have a pair of 3-2 wins over Greater Trail and Campbell River.

The South Okanagan Flames are 2-0-1 after three games in bantam Tier 3 action. They are facing Dawson Creek in one semifinal game. South Okanagan’s midget Tier 3 team won one of three games in round robin. They lost their final game 5-0 to Terrace.

The peewee Tier 3 squad went 2-0-2 in round robin in Kitimat at the Terrace Sportsplex. They now face Tri Port in one of the semifinals.
