The Ice Cold Pitches completed the perfect season and defended their title by grazing the Whitehouse Mortgage Gators 17-16 in the Vernon Women’s Slo-Pitch League playoff final Wednesday night at Kin Park.
The Gators went up by two in the extra international inning, but the Pitches responded with three runs. The Pitches also won the regular-season pennant at 10-0.
Brittany Housego jacked two bombs for the Pitches, while Taylor Weixl was 6-for-6 and Jenny Gartner was 4-for-6.
Jen Doyle supplied three hits, including a home run in the sixth inning, knocking in three runs for the Gators. Melissa Locke was 2-for-4 with a three-run dinger in the seventh inning.
Kelli Graham was 3-for-4 with a triple and a double, while Jen Thatcher and Taryn Robertson each went 3-for-4 with one ribbie.
In the eighth inning, with Robertson on second base under the international rule, Graham smacked a triple to score Robertson. Andrea Smith then stroked a sacrifice fly to score Graham.
The Gators mercied the Lumby Dozers 16-3 in the semifinal Wednesday night.
Lynn Gregoire was 4-for-4 with two triples, two singles and four RBI for the Gators, while all-star pitcher Jenner drove in two runs on three hits and Robertson ripped a two-run triple.
Doyle was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Locke was 3-for-4 with one ribbie.
Meanwhile, the Honey Badgers bounced the Beer Nutz 22-12 in Sunday’s final of the fourth annual Doug Massie Co-Ed Two-Pitch Memorial Tournament.
There was a field of four teams dressed as super heroes and villians with the Honey Badgers going 3-0 in the round-robin, followed by the Beer Nutz at 2-1, New and Used at 1-2 -8 and the Massie family at 0-3.
“Although this year’s tourney was smaller than previous years, the spirit of all the players was the highest I have seen it,” said tourney director Heather Savitsky.
“A huge thanks to The Skronkers ball team who have run the beer gardens and served up great BBQ burgers and hotdogs since the tourney started.”
Proceeds go to the Doug Massie Memorial Fund. Massie, a highly popular soccer and slo-pitch player, died Aug. 20, 2010 of a brain aneurism, at the age of 51.
