Cole Shafer posts five points to lead Langley offence Wednesday at LEC

The Langley Thunder put in an inspired performance Wednesday night, while at the same time honouring a teen who lost a courageous battle with cancer in 2012.

The Thunder edged the visiting New Westminster Salmonbellies 10-8 in Western Lacrosse Association action.

It was a positive night all around, as the Thunder auctioned off their jerseys in support of the Tessa Beauchamp Foundation.

During the first intermission, fans watched a video tribute to Tessa Beauchamp, who was a basketball star with the Holy Cross Crusaders.

The foundation was created in memory of the 18-year-old who passed away after a long battle with a rare type of cancer.

While the Thunder have supported the foundation in past years, this is the first time they partnered with the Make A Wish Foundation.

The game, which is being sponsored by Quorum Construction Group, saw fans gain admittance by donation. And half of the 50/50 draw’s proceeds will also go to the Make A Wish Foundation.

Thunder president Ken Buchan chose Make A Wish as the beneficiary after sending out emails to prospective charities.

On the floor, the Thunder led 3-1 after the first period and managed to stay a goal or two ahead of the ‘Bellies the rest of the way, led by Cole Shafer’s two goals, three assists outing, a four point night from James Rahe (one goal, three assists), and a pair of goals from Brandon Clelland.

Logan Schuss tallied a hat trick while Mike Messenger scored twice in a losing cause for the Salmonbellies.

The Thunder remain in the basement of the seven-team WLA with a 3-10 record, however, two of their wins have come in their last three games.

The Thunder are on the road for their next two games, Saturday in Coquitlam against the Adanacs and Tuesday in Maple Ridge versus the Burrards.
