Penticton Pinnacles FC forward Allyn Deakin puts a move on a Kootenay South Storm defender in Thursday's opening round match of the Girls U15 BC Youth Soccer Girls Provincial B Cup tournament at Kings Park. Penticton won game the game 9-2.

Allyn Deakin netted five goals to help the Pinnacles FC under-15 girls soccer team crush the Kootenay South Storm 9-2 in their opening game of the B.C. Soccer B Provincial Cup championship Thursday.

When asked about Deakin’s performance, coach Derrick Webb said that’s what she does.

“She’s been doing that for us for three years. I don’t think she’s had a five-goal game,” he said. “She’s definitely our catalyst up front. When she’s scoring goals, we’re winning games.”

Contributing to the offensive explosion were Maria Iannone with two goals, while Mackenzie Dunham and Emmy Caruso scored the other goals.

“those are our goalscorers. They did a job today,” said Webb.

The Pinnacles start wasn’t what their coach wanted to see as they were “shaky” in his opinion, allowing the first goal. The Pinnacles countered right away and he said that seemed to get the group going. The main thing that Webb liked about their performance is that his players kept things simple. That is something he has preached all season. They played two-touch soccer in their end and the neutral zone. When the Pinnacles got the Storm in their end, the Pinnacles took them on and made the chase the ball.

“I think when they got down a couple goals, they had to squeeze up,” said Webb. “That exposed them at the back.”

Webb said the lopsided victory will give his team confidence, especially Deakin. Webb said when she is producing, teams focus on her leaving Caruso and Iannone open.

The Pinnacles are next in action Friday at 3 p.m. at Kings Park 3 against the BGSC Blaze.
