The Grand Forks Piranhas swim club were in action again this past weekend at a meet in Trail and finished a very respectable third.
“This past weekend we saw great swimming from many of our swimmers as they tried to better their times in both the preliminary session and the finals session all in the same day,” said assistant coach Doug Van Ek. “We had a great attendance of 32 swimmers and of those nearly all improved their best times, many of which were from the Grand Forks home meet a week before.”
Piranha Kiyomi Dunnet broke the meet record of 36.17 held by Amanda Freschi since 2001 in the Division 3 Girls 50m Butterfly in prelims. Teammate Shian Corbeil broke it again in the finals with a time of 35.46 a mere .26 ahead of Kiyomi.
Bryce Findlater achieved a personal best time in the 50m Butterfly. He took off 5 seconds.
Grand Forks swimmer of the meet honours went to Aysia Morgan.
“She achieved four personal best times over the weekend and qualified for finals in all four events,” said Van Ek. “In the 100m Freestyle, Aysia took off 16 seconds! It is Aysia’s first year in division two, which means she is competing against girls a year older yet Aysia is set upon catching these girls and striving for a medal. She was a close contender for the bronze medal this past weekend.”
Van Ek said that the meet was a challenge as swimmers had to race in both heats and finals.
“Competing at a meet with both heats and finals poses a difficult task as the swimmers must qualify with a fast morning time to race in finals, and then they race to the finish yet again for the first place finish.”
“Overall the Piranhas posted many great times in both sessions and will continue to improve for next weekends meet in Creston.”
