The Nanaimo Hub City Paving Pirates look as though they’re ready for meaningful baseball.

The B.C. Premier Baseball League team won two and tied one in a tripleheader Sunday in Coquitlam. The Pirates beat the North Shore Twins 7-1, hammered the Vancouver Cannons 8-1 and then jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the Coquitlam Reds before hanging on for a 6-6 tie.

Manager Doug Rogers said he was glad to get in the games.

“We needed them,” he said. “We were lucky with the weather; we were going over there under iffy conditions and got all three in without getting wet.”

Pitching was a strength during the tripleheader, Rogers said. Kenton Schroter, Nick Smiley and Mike Williams all gave the team solid innings and the rest of the staff was strong, as well. Some of the Pirates who had multiple hits on the day were Joey Sabo, Crosby Rushton, Nick Granton, Liam Goodall and Brady Rogers.

“We’re still not playing well, we’re not anywhere near where I’d like them to be – neither is anybody – but if we get all cylinders we’re going to be pretty tough to beat.”

GAME ON … The BCPBL season starts Saturday (April 2) when the Pirates visit the Victoria Eagles … The Nanaimo Palladian Pirates junior premier team, meanwhile, will start its season April 17 with a visit to the Fraser Valley.
