The plan was again to hit the other team hard early, and negate any chance of the opponents finding their rhythm.
The Mission Secondary School Roadrunners played how coach Kevin Watrin wanted them to, decimating the Pitt Meadows Marauders 45-0 last Friday night.
That’s not to say there wasn’t a bit of luck involved too, said Watrin.
The defensive line stripped the ball from the Marauders off the second play from scrimmage, which put the ball into cornerback Erik DiGuistini’s hands as he made a 32-yard run for a touchdown to open the scoring.
From there on, the local football team just kept running right through the opposition, going up 28 points in the first quarter alone, with credit going to quarterback Kevin Wiens and Jesse Forcier, running back.
Forcier continued blasting through the defensive line in the second quarter, running untouched for 72 yards on one play for a TD.
Brenden Atkinson ran 24 yards for a TD, while a 35-yard field goal by DiGuistini in the third quarter rounded out the scoring.
Roadrunners’ defensive coordinator Larry Clarkson said, “It was the best defensive performance in years.”
A sentiment echoed by Watrin, who added the massive effort of the offensive line all night, which created “huge holes” for the running game.
