As the calendar turns to the new year, the boys and girls of summer get ready to hit the diamond.
Carnarvon Ball Club hosts a softball winter clinic for U10 and U12 players (born between 2005 and 2008). The fun, 10-week clinic is designed to improve players’ overall softball skills, including batting, throwing, catching and fielding. Players will be divided according to age to practice and learn age-specific softball skills, organizers say.
The sessions run Sundays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. from Jan. 8 to March 12 at the indoor field at Oak Bay Recreation Centre. The cost is $70 and space is limited. Contact softballregistrar@carnarvonballclub.com
Registration for Carnavon’s regular season of baseball and softball is opening soon – see www.carnarvonballclub.com for details.

Carnarvon’s softball programs serve those from U8 to U18.
Little League also opens registration this month, with sessions slated for Jan. 28 and 29 and Feb. 4 and 5 for players in both baseball (ages three to 14 years) and softball (ages eight to 16 years).
Beacon Hill Little League serves Oak Bay players living from Canmore Road south, while National Little League welcomes those living from Canmore Road north to the University of Victoria. Visit www.beaconhilllittleleague.org or www.nationallittleleague.org for details.
Older players wanting to try their hand at competitive play are invited to the Midget AAA Eagles team tryouts, beginning this Sunday, Jan. 8 at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre.
The team, part of the Victoria Eagles Baseball high-performance program, plays a 40-game season with weekend games split between Greater Victoria and the Lower Mainlaind and Interior. The team also participates in several weekend tournaments.
Practices start with the weekly indoor sessions at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre with play heading outdoors in March.
