The Peninsula Storm are the silver lining, and the gold.
The U15 soccer team defeated Bays United to win the 2010/2011 U15 Silver Girls District Cup Final 2-0.
The Storm started slowly but weathered the strong Bays’ attack. Momentum shifted midway through the first half as nerves settled and Peninsula’s midfield increased their ball possession, opened up the field and started creating chances for their forwards. Both teams narrowly missed opportunities but solid goalkeeping at each end kept the game scoreless at the half.
The Storm continued building momentum in the second half, putting constant pressure on the Bays defenders and goalkeeper while Peninsula’s defense stiffened up, largely controlling the Bays’ attack.
Seventeen minutes into the half Virginia MacAulay found the net from a superb Andrea Kerr cross, beating the goalkeeper at the far post. Continuing to pressure the Bays’ backfield, the Storm held the narrow lead late into the game. With just under five minutes remaining, Kerr slotted home the all-important insurance goal, sealing the victory.
Midfielder Emma Goodwin earned game MVP while goalkeeper Cailyn Wolski recorded the shutout.
