Steve Johnston was looking for another victory at the Re/Max Men’s Open on Saturday, but Fruitvale’s Scott Browell intervened, tying Johnston with a par 72 after 18 holes to force a playoff.
In the sudden-death extra hole playoff, Browell fired his tee shot off the number-1 hole right down the middle of the 556 yard par 5 to sit about 250 out. Johnston followed suit and both lay within about 20 feet of each other for the second shot. After Johnston laid up, Browell would follow suit and sit about 40 yards out. Johnston would step up stick his ball to within 10 feet left of the pin, and Browell again lofted his ball, to sit about three inches from Johnston’s.
Browell would step up and sink the birdie putt, and with the tournament on the line, Johnston’s putt would bend left to give Browell the championship.
Bill King won the handicappers title shooting a net 61 on the par 72 Champion course.
