The sixth-place UVic Vikes women’s team (10-4) puts its six-game win streak on the line when it welcomes the Trinity Western Spartans (9-5) to CARSA, Friday and Saturday nights.
Game time for the women is 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. The respective men’s teams will follow at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.
“We know it’s going to be a fun, tightly fought weekend,” said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair. “It’ll be tough and will have a big implication on where people are in the standings at the end of the weekend.”
Last weekend the Vikes swept the Lethbridge Pronghorns 84-59 and 72-61. Third-year guard Amira Giannattasio led the Vikes on Friday with 30 points.
Vikes golden
The UVic Vikes track team is at the University of Washington Invitational this weekend.
Last week the team earned accolades at the Golden Bears Open in Edmonton, with Rachel Francois and Cole Peterson earning this week’s Muscle MLK Athletes of the Week.
Francois, a fifth-year Vike, won gold in the 600-metre race and was a member of the Vikes team that finished second in the 4x400m relay.
Peterson was first in the men’s 1,000m race at the Golden Bears Open with a time of 2:25.46.
Braves in final stretch
The Saanich Braves are staring down the final eight games of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season.
The Braves host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at Pearkes arena, Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Braves had won four of five games in January before being hammered 11-4 by the red hot Campbell River Storm on Sunday.
The Storm are scorching everyone lately, having scored 38 goals in their last four games.
The Braves (25-11-1) remain second in the South division behind the Victoria Cougars (27-8) while Comox (18-16-1) is third in the North division.
On Saturday the Braves visit the Westshore Wolves (16-20-2), 6:30 p.m. at the Q Centre.
