B.C. boy Vasek Pospisil has won his opening round match at Wimbledon 2013, a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Frenchman Marc Gicquel on Monday morning on the perfectly manicured lawns of the All England Club.
Pospisil, from Vernon, now trains in Vancouver, B.C. and lives in the Bahamas, and he is currently ranked 99th in the world. This is his second Wimbledon (he lost in the first round last year). He celebrated his 23rd birthday Sunday. Gicquel is the oldest player in the field, at 36.
Canadian female player Eugenie Bouchard also won her first-round match over Galina Voskoboeva – 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 – and will play former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic next.
Bouchard is the lone Canadian female at Wimbledon this year, while Pospisil is joined in the men’s bracket by Jesse Levine and Milos Raonic, who is ranked No. 17 in the world.
