Potkins competes at Canada Summer Games

The Nelson paddler was also at the Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships

Nelson paddler Heather Potkins is back home after making her debut at both the Canada Summer Games and the Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships.

Potkins, a coach at the Nelson Kayak and Canoe Club, was one of five women representing B.C. at the Games in Winnipeg, which ran July 28 to Aug. 13. for athletes under 21 years old.

She finished sixth with partner Melody Oh of Maple Ridge in the 1,000-metre C-2 race, then seventh in the 500 C-4.

Potkins then moved onto the championships in Welland, Ont., where she was 17th out of 29 paddlers in the 6,000-metre race, but was disqualified in the 200 after strong winds blew her off course.
