The Penticton Power mercied the Enderby Storm 14-4 on Sunday to advance to the Softball B.C. under-14 C girls championship.
The Power are joining the Kelowna Elite and Kelowna Blue Jays in Alberni Valley July 7 to 9. Power coach Dan Wilson watched as the players bats came alive and their defensive play was “awesome” in the match to clinch third-place.
“We needed to win to continue,” said Wilson. “The girls stepped up and played really well as a team.”
Wilson and his coaching staff were very pleased with how the players came together. They received great pitching from Eden Tonhauser, Brooklyn Olexa and Sydney Clark. Wilson liked the positive attitude the players maintained and the resiliency they showed to come back in games. He and the coaches also had to balance the playing time of 14 players, as five sat out each inning.
The Power didn’t know until Sunday morning that they were in the top-four with a chance to play for a provincial berth until being told. Ramon Lawrence, Softball B.C. District 9 minor co-ordinator, said Softball B.C. provincial championships are almost always 16-team events as there are 15 districts. For the U14C Provincials, there were several districts that did not send a team. That left spots open for teams in other districts that are allocated based on the number of registered teams in that district. District 9 had eight registered teams in U14C which is one of the largest in B.C., so they were allocated three spots in the provincials rather than just one.
