Maddie Powls thought she was going to the Western Canadian U16A Ringette Championships with the Vernon Fury.
However, after winning the provincial title a few weeks ago in Langley, the Fury were told by officials their application was received too late so the runner-up team would represent B.C.
Powls got the call from the Kelowna Hype and she gladly accepted the offer. The Hype are scheduled to fly to Regina this morning. They meet the host team in their opener Thursday morning.
“They told me they like that I’m a classy player and I’m a good playmaker,” said Powls, a 15-year-old, Grade 9 VSS student. “They said I’m gritty on and off the ice.”
Powls, a forward, will be competing in a western championships for the first time. She will feel comfortable with the Hype.
“I played with six or seven of them in the B.C. Winter Games last year in Vernon. We won a bronze medal.”
Team B.C. takes on Alberta Thursday night and then go up against Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Friday. The playoffs are Saturday.
