Pro Am excites hockey fans

When it was all said and done, Team Blue defeated Team Red by a score of 14-6.

More than 600 hockey fans were in attendance to cheer on the annual Salmon Arm Hockey School Pro Am Hockey Scholarship game last Tuesday night.

When it was all said and done, Team Blue defeated Team Red by a score of 14-6.

Team Blue was led by Ottawa Senator/Edmonton Oil King stalwart Curtis Lazar and Carolina Hurricane and former Silverback, Riley Nash. Each chipped in three goals.

Bryden Marsh of the Silverbacks, St. Louis Blues Tyler Shattock and Minnesota Wild Brady Brassart added two goals each while singles came off the sticks of Logan Mick and Alex Gillies. Former Calgary Flame and current elite Finnish goaltender, Leland Irving was outstanding in the net for Team Blue.

Team Red’s goals were scored by Brendan Nash, Shane Hanna, Mike Ulrich, Chad Hohman, Cain Franson and Carter Cochrane. Former Silverback goalie and now with University of New Hampshire, Adam Clarke, was between the pipes for Team Red.

Fan favourite and former Edmonton Oiler Ryan Smyth was fun to watch as he played his 12th consecutive Pro Am game at Shaw Centre. Smyth was presented with a fly fishing rod by organizer Tom Marsh of the hockey school at the beginning of the third period. Smyth’s daughters, Isabella and Elizabeth, handled the singing of the national anthem prior to game time.

Toronto Maple Leaf defenceman, Cody Franson, was a huge presence in the line-up for Team Blue. The 6’5” rear guard was a dominant force for Team Blue as he made several of his pinpoint passes to his forwards.

The annual scholarship is presented to a graduating student. Past winners include Shane Hanna, Alex Rodgers, Trevor Galan and Trevor Geiger. Darien Head of the Sicamous Eagles was the recipient of the scholarship this year.
