Quesnel boxers set for bouts in Prince George

Five members of the 2 Rivers Boxing Club are set to put their training to the test Saturday night in Prince George.

The evening will be a family affair for Daryl Petsul and his sons Haven Gillmaier and Greg Petsul.

Daryl, 39, is making his first appearance in the ring after joining the boxing club over a year ago.

Haven and Greg, by comparison, are veterans with at least three bouts under their belts.

“A love of competition,” Daryl said to explain why he decided to step into the ring for the first time.

In addition to the challenge, Daryl pointed to the skill and strategy involved with boxing as additional factors motivating his decision.

“I’m going to have to let my hands go and not be so tentative,” Daryl said would be a key element he would focus on.

Greg, 13, is making his fifth appearance in the ring and his strategy for Saturday night is clear.

“Avoid big punches,” he said.

Haven, 14, who favours his straight-right punch, also said he would focus on keeping his hands up to avoid punches and would also focus on not expending too much energy in the early rounds.

Also heading to Prince George are Matt O’Flynn and Joey McKerricher.

Bouts begin at 7 p.m. at the Prince George Roll-A-Dome.
