Quesnel bull rider hangs on for the win in Alberta

Dustin Spiers, 18, says the college season has prepared him to have a successful summer

There must be something in the Quesnel water that produces incredible bull riders.

Denton Spiers, who just won the Canadian College Finals Rodeo (CCFR) in Silver Sage, Alb., last Thursday (March 28), follows in a long line of local bull riders like Lane Cork, Matt O’Flynn and Steve Hohmann who have found success far and wide.

Representing Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek, where he is pursuing certification in heavy duty mechanics, the 18-year-old finished tops in a field of 10 competitors from across the country.

“It was my first time competing at the event,” says Spiers. “So I’m happy.

“I like to think I was expecting [to win], but I was pretty pleased anyway.”

With the victory, Spiers also clinched the season leader title.

Despite being confident in his chances at winning, Spiers is somewhat modest when describing the ride that clinched it for him.

“It just worked out good,” he says. “That’s all there is to say. I drew alright and had an alright bull.

“It was just a good little practice bull.”

Practice bull or not, he outrode his competitors and got some great experience before the next season comes along.

“I got to get some good practice doing some rodeos during the winter,” says Spiers. “I’d never really had that, so hopefully it sets me up for this summer.”

The young rodeo competitor will be entering a number of British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) events over the next few months.

Locals looking to cheer him on can make the drive down south to the 29th annual Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo at the end of the month (April 26-29), where Spiers is hoping to put on a stellar show.

“Hopefully I’ll come out with the win and make a good bull ride,” he says.
