Quesnel River Archers float away from provincials with huge medal haul

Local squad nabbed 11 medals at indoor championships in Victoria

A nine-hour trip to Vancouver Island did little to affect the aims of Quesnel River Archers sharpshooters this weekend (April 19-21).

The club had an incredible medal haul, claiming 11 altogether over a wide range of age and bow categories.

Club president Spencer Gamache won a gold in Junior Men’s Compound, as well as Junior Men’s Recurve.

Lora-Lee Murray, who won a Silver in Senior Ladies Barebow, says Gamache’s double medals is an impressive feat.

“Spencer shot very well,” she says. “He decided last year that he wanted to attempt a Recurve, and he is a natural athlete so has managed to master it quite quickly.”

She adds the young archer opted to shoot both discplines at the Victoria-held event so he could maximize the experience.

Showing promise for the future of the club were first-timers Kayden D’Entremont and Jess Bolitho.

Murray says the two were the club’s all-stars at the event.

“Both archers are new to archery, and this was their first major competition,” she points out. “Despite a few nervous moments at the beginning of their events, which is expected from most of us, these two young archers rallied and brought home medals.”

D’Entremont won gold in Men’s Compound Pre-Cub, and Bolitho clinched silver in Women’s Barebow Pre-Cub.

“We are extremely proud of the way they performed but even more proud of their attitude toward themselves, the sport and their fellow archers,” Murray continues. “They were amazing ambassadors for our club and Quesnel.”

The event, which was held in Victoria and hosted by the Victoria Bowmen Archery Club, saw over 150 of the best indoor archers from across the province compete.

Murray says there was some tougher competition than previous years as the sport becomes more popular, which makes the River Archers’ great results that much more impressive.

The club has now completed its indoor season and will be beginning outdoor training for the summer months ahead.
