The Quesnel Thunder peewee rep ice hockey team took no prisoners at a five-team tournament in Williams Lake this weekend (Nov. 16-17).
The Thunder went 5-0 and beat Williams Lake 5-2 in the final.
The Thunder players now have medals in the two tournaments they have played in and are hoping to keep the momentum going during a year in which they will host the provincial championships.
“It was a successful weekend,” says head coach Mike Riley, “but we still have many areas to improve as we work on peaking for our provincials, which will be at home in Quesnel.”
Riley adds the goaltending was strong all weekend, and Blake Riley and Riley Lettington led the way offensively with eight goals each.
“It was a big break-out weekend for Lettington,” says team manager Mike Ernst. “It was good to see.”
Also earning praise was Liam Richardson.
“He was a rock on defence all weekend and was named to the all-star team,” says Riley.
Ernst says the team’s work ethic was impressive.
“They battle,” he says. “Nobody gets down on each other too. They’re all very supporting and get along well.”
The talented team will host a home tournament Jan. 10 before hosting their provincials in March.
