Quick Sand warming issued

Treacherous times await their foes in beach volleyball playoffs

Only one team has walked away from Quick Sand with a win in local beach volleyball action this spring, and now the Bumping Uglies will shoot for a repeat of their earlier heroics – this time in the playoffs.

The Quick Sand team compiled a near-perfect 9-1 record in the recreational tier of the Comox Valley Sports & Social Club’s 18-team Beach Volleyball League, only coming up short by a 2-1 margin against the Bumping Uglies (6-4) in Week 4 action. The two teams were scheduled to meet at the Standard Park Beach Volleyball Courts in a playoff semifinal on Tuesday, with the winner going to the first-place game next week.

In the other playoff semifinal that will send a team to the championship game, Tips and Passes (8-2) are up against Dig These Balls (7-3). When the two teams met earlier in the season, it was Dig These Balls emerging with a 2-0 upset win. The losers of those two semifinals will play for third place.

In the intermediate tier of local beach volleyball action, which plays on Wednesday nights, it’s the undefeated Just the Tip (11-0) team up against the *A Team (5-5-1) in one playoff semifinal, while the Block Stars (7-2-2) face off against Unprotected Sets (6-5) in the other. The *A Team will need a full squad and great teamwork to hand Just the Tip their first loss of the season, but they are the only team to take a set off the squad that travels in from Campbell River to play in the league. They lost 3-1 in a game earlier this season.

Registration is open until June 25 for all of the CVSSC’s co-ed summer sports leagues, which includes beach volleyball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, slo pitch, flag football and kickball. Individuals, small groups and teams can register online at www.comoxvalleysports.ca.
