Abbotsford Senior Secondary’s turf field will host the second annual Quidditch Canada Western Regional Championship this weekend.

Quidditch is a full-contact sport based on the game in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, where the players fly around the field on brooms and score by throwing a ball through three hoops on stands.

It’s played worldwide by over 400 teams, and there are 30 teams alone in Canada.

This weekend’s tournament includes the Vancouver Vipertooths, University of Victoria Valkyries, Calgary Mudbloods, Simon Fraser University Marauders and the Alberta Clippers.

The tournament will consist of a full single round robin played over two days followed by a championship final. Once all teams have played each other once, teams will be ranked from first to fifth based on a win-loss record and tie breakers.

The national tournament will be held in Kingston, Ont., on April 2 and 3, featuring the western conference winners and other top teams from across Canada.

This weekend’s games run from 2:15 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, and 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. Entrance is by donation.
