Race, baseball among weekend action

Sports fans have plenty of action on the week's sports calendar

The time for the Oak Bay Half Marathon, 10K and Relay is here. One of Victoria’s most scenic running events, the race starts in the heart of Oak Bay near Windsor Park.

The event takes place on Sunday, May 29, and while online registration has come to a close, you can still register until Saturday, May 28. Visit raceonline.ca for all information.

After winding its way through residential Oak Bay, the course loops out and back along the seaside route of Beach Drive to Loon Bay Park, with one gradual hill, before making its way back down to the finish line in Oak Bay.

While the race will fill the neighbourhood with activity Sunday, on Saturday, May 28, Windsor Park plays host to the Victoria Div. 1 Cricket League. University takes on Cowichan at 12 p.m. and on Sunday, May 29 the Alcos play the Islanders at 12 p.m., also at Windsor Park.

In Div. 2 cricket play, Metchosin plays the Pigs Trotters at Windsor Park at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1.

From one ball game to another, the Carnarvon Park-based Victoria Bantam AAA Red Eagles have a game-packed week, opening Saturday, May 28 at Luxton Field. The Eagles face Triangle AAA at 3 p.m. and the AAA Black Eagles at 6 p.m. Play continues Tuesday, May 31 when they head up island to take on Chemainus at 6 p.m. On Saturday, June 4 the Red Eagles are back at Carnarvon, hosting Delta in a double-header. Games go at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Premier Victoria Mariners have a difficult, six-game week ahead. Starting Saturday, May 28, the Oak Bay-based regional squad heads up Island to play the Nanaimo Pirates in a double-header starting at 12 p.m.

They then host the Langley Blaze on Sunday, May 29 in a double-header at Henderson Field. Games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The Ms return to play rival Victoria Eagles on Tuesday, May 31 at Lambrick Park and Thursday, June 2 at Royal Athletic Park, with a 6 p.m. start.

The Junior Premier Mariners have this coming weekend off from league play but return to the field Saturday, June 4 to face the Coquitlam Redlegs on the road.

The JP Mariners return home Sunday, June 5 to host the North Delta Blue Jays in a doubleheader at Henderson starting at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The Victoria Eagles’ Premier team has four games this week, all in town.

In addition to the two mid-week games against the Mariners, the  Eagles play host to the Nanaimo Pirates in a doubleheader Sunday, May 29 at Lambrick Park. First pitches are at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Junior Premier Eagles also return after last week’s action-packed week.

On Tuesday, May 28 the JP Eagles host the Langley Blaze in a doubleheader at Lambrick Park with games going at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, June 4 the Eagles return to Lambrick to face the North Delta Blue Jays.

Good news for Oak Bay’s junior golfers, Thrifty Foods and the University of Victoria host youth golf clinics this Sunday, May 29, for ages 6 to 16. The $30 clinics include lessons, two week-long passes to Bayview Place Island Savings Open, t-shirt and more. The registration deadline is today (Friday, May 27). Also coming up on the local golf calendar, from June 2 to June 5, the Bayview Place Island Savings Open tournament takes place at Uplands golf club.

The four-day event offers day passes for $10 or a week pass for $30. For more information, visit bpisopen.ca.

Local lacrosse action is in full swing as the Victoria Shamrocks open play Friday, May 27, when they host the New Westminster Salmonbellies at 7:45 p.m. at the Q Centre.

Come Saturday, May 28, the Shamrocks head up Island, going head-to-head against the Nanaimo Timbermen at 7 p.m.

After a few days’ rest, the Shamrocks are on the road Thursday, June 2 to face the  Salmonbellies  on their home turf. Finally, the ‘Rocks finish the week off on Friday, June 3 when they host the Maple Ridge Burrards at 7:45 p.m. at the Q Centre.

Families can head to the Henderson tennis courts this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a community tennis event from Recreation Oak Bay.

Hosted in partnership with Wilson World Demo Tour, learn tips and strategies to help you improve your game. The mini tennis festival includes music, on-court contests and prizes.
