Rail Jam brings out the best in local snow talent

The sixth annual Rayz Rail Jam took over half of the parking lot at the Bulkley Valley Pool last Saturday, as a total of 80 skiers and snowboarders ranging from 6 years old to adults showed off their best tricks on a box, a rail, a quarterpipe topped with a second rail, and a jump. Rayz owner and organizer Jason Krauskopf said he was thrilled at the end of the day.

“It was our biggest one yet, and the weather was cooperative,” he said.

He also pointed out the huge pile of snow, lights, sound system and skyjack for judges couldn’t have happened without the generosity of local businesses.

“We’re super appreciative of all the sponsorship and help from the community, it’s gotten way too big for me to handle it myself,” said Krauskopf.

This year also marked the first year for a 9 and Under category, and a turnout of 14 little rippers in that age group could only be seen as a great success.

“That’s the next generation coming up,” said Krauskopf. “In a few years these are the kids that you’re  going to see tearing up the hill.”

In the 9 and Under category, the top skiers were Darcy Fraser in first, Ashton Tilijoe in second and Logan Steinke in third. Tosh Krauskopf was the top snowboarder, followed by Kaitlynn Pederson and Darren Taylor.

In the 10 to 13 category, Austin Arnett was the top snowboarder, followed by Mattias Haskins and Keenan Elson. Greg Humble was the first place skier.

Taylor Josephy was first in the 14 to 17 skiers, followed by John Hodson and Quinn Hill. Charlie Mott was the first place snowboarder, with Trenton Brujhell in second and Kenny Thomas in third.

In the Womens Open division, Mikayla Moore was the first place snowboarder, with Krista Cline in second and Sarah Belford in third. Danielle Bradford was the top skier, followed by Siri Tuores.

In the Mens Open category, the top skier was Jason Hamberg, followed by Tim Smith and Everett Hodson. For snowboarders, Brant Holenstein finished first, with Tim Huisman in second and Brad King in third.

Jason Hamberg won for the Best Trick, for a 450 onto the box, ending with a 270 off.

And if you don’t know what that is, just take the author’s word that it’s impressive.
