Defence wins championships and that was true once again this past weekend.
In overtime in the championship final of the Vancouver Flag Football League at Burnaby Lakes, The Rams held off The Outlawz 27-26 to lay claim to top spot.
“It was a back-and-forth game. We were up early and then they tied it up late, but we beat them in overtime,” said quarterback Brad Kiendl.
Each team got three possessions in overtime with the choice to go for one point from the five-yard line or two points from the 10.
The Rams defence held firm on The Outlawz first attempt, then scored from the five to take the lead. Both defences then stopped the next two attempts and with The Outlawz needing to score on their last chance, the Rams did not budge.
The Rams also defeated The Pulls 33-12 in the semifinals over the weekend.
This was the second major title for the team in the past month as over the May long weekend they won the Maybowl, a major tournament in Kelowna which attracts the top teams from western Canada.
Jared Donor, the team’s rusher, won MVP of that tournament.
The Rams, who have 14 players on the team, including player/coach Eric Lehwald, are primarily between the ages of 26 and 30.
