UFV Cascades centre Sarah Wierks has jumped ahead of former Calgary Dinos great Janis Paskevich on Canada West’s all-time rebounding list.
Heading into Friday’s game against the UBC Okanagan Heat, Wierks was just four points behind Paskevich and it didn’t take her long to move into second spot all-time.
Less than seven minutes into the game, Wierks, a six-two, fifth-year senior, had already grabbed five boards and a place in the record books. She finished the night with 926 rebounds for her career, second only in conference history to Saskatchewan Huskies star Sarah Crooks, who grabbed 1,181 rebounds.
The Cascades won the game 70-67 and on Saturday completed a sweep of UBC Okanagan with a 77-65 victory. Third-year UFV power forward Katie Brink scored a career-high 27 points on Saturday night, while Wierks scored 22 points and 19 rebounds, and added seven blocked shots and four steals.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve really tried to learn how to get that chemistry between us, because I think we can be really dominant together,” Brink said about playing with Wierks. “She’s an awesome player, and I’m so blessed to be able to play with her.”
