REC REPORT: Christina Lake Triathlon still a go for late June

Contrary to popular belief, the Christina Lake Triathlon will still take place on June 24.

The eighth annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Sprint Triathlon is still on and the Christina Lake Recreation Commission is looking for volunteers to join our event crew and assist with traffic control, registration and other small jobs on Sunday, June 24.

Please contact us at 250-442-2202 or email gfplay@rdkb.com.

If you can spare a few hours to help out with this great community event, it would be greatly appreciated.

Triathlon is a sport growing in popularity around the world. Race participation has

increased by more than 300 per cent in the last five years. The sport has also experienced

significant growth in Canada since the birth of Triathlon Canada 25 years ago. In fact, it is now one of the nation’s most rapidly growing sports.

The Pharmasave Christina Lake triathlon is a great first-timer’s event.

The swim is a 750-metre course parallel to the public beach so it eliminates the fear of swimming out into the deep, open water.

We have volunteer kayakers out in the water patrolling the swimmers as they make their way around the course.

The bike route is controlled by professional flag people and volunteers, who provide safety out on the roads and streets.

The run route is out and back on West Lake Drive; we direct the runners to run on the same side out, providing safety for all athletes. BC Ambulance service is on sight to provide first aid if needed.

Our goal is to offer a positive and fun experience for the athletes so they will return to Christina Lake for future events.

The earlybird registration deadline is Thursday, May 31 but you can still register up until Wednesday, June 20.

Kids and adults have a chance to experience a mini triathlon at the aquatic centre on Wednesday, June 13.

We are changing the format slightly, starting with the run and ending with the swim in the pool. This is a great time to get the feel of how the transitions work and how it feels to do all three disciplines together.

To register as a volunteer or to register for the triathlons, please give us a call at 250-442-2202 or email us at gfplay@rdkb.com.
