The North Thompson Recreation Society report that Barriere Secondary (BSS) grade 8 students enjoyed ski and snowshoe lessons up at the Barriere Forks ski trails this season.

The grade 8 students had a great time learning these two winter sports, as well as learning how to geocache thanks to Louise Lodge.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Students navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

The students also took part in a nature scavenger hunt while answering questions about their native habitat, and some outdoor survival questions that were set up along the  snowshoe  trails.

“Temperatures were a bit cooler this year and we had to cancel one lesson due to cold weather,” says ski coach Mary MacLennan, “However, we still managed to have our lessons by  dressing warm, having a nice warm cabin to come into after the lesson, and lots of  hot chocolate and snacks for everyone.  We wound up the final lessons  with a wiener roast and cake.”

MacLennan also reported the society has hosted some of the grade 2, 3 and 4 students from the Barriere Elementary for a ski and snowshoe day at the Barriere Forks ski trails as well.
