Track season for local elementary students came to an exciting conclusion this month, as the annual Nanaimo District Elementary School Track and Field Championships were held June 9 at Rotary Bowl stadium.
This week we highlight the top three finishers in each age group from girls’ events, which included several new district records.
Two of those came in the tyke (born 2006-07) age division, courtesy of Pleasant Valley athlete Haley Martin. Martin set new records by winning the 100m sprint in 15.03 seconds, and the 200m in 31.46 seconds. She also earned first place in the long jump event. Avery Harrison from McGirr was second in 100m and 200m, while Cinnabar’s Savannah Baker took third in the 200m. Third in the 200m and first in 800m was Hammond Bay.
Gaby Zanette from Cinnabar Valley won the 400m, Hammond Bay was second and Hannah Duffell of Pauline Haarer won the 1500m. Third in 400m was Cinnabar’s Katelyn Putz, while third in 800m was Ayaka Lee of Rock City. Subin Yun from Forest Park placed second in 1500m.
In field events for tyke girls, Pearl Ingdal from North Cedar and Angelina Joughin of Rock City were second and third in long jump. Joughlin was first in the softball throw, Sdern Daleen from Gabriola was second, and Ava Senini-Russell of Cilaire was third.
Competition on the track for peewee (born 2004-05) girls saw McGirr runner Sonya Urbanowicz win both the 100m and 200m events. Erin Murphy from Uplands Park and Sara Hurt of McGirr were second and third in the 100m, with Hammond Bay and Keira Martin of Pauline Haarer second and third in the 200m. Top 3 finishers in the 400m were Chase River’s Emma Mitrenga, Vicky Dauphney from North Cedar, and Isabelle Parsons of Pauline Haarer.
In the longer distances, Hammond Bay was first in both 800m and 1500m. Placing second and third were Keira Martin of Pauline Haarer and Hannah Smith from Ladysmith Intermediate in the 800m, and Sebryn Wear of Cinnabar and Alexa Berg from McGirr in the 1500m.
In long jump, Emma Mitrenga of Chase River was first, Brooklyn Bens of Quarterway second, and Samantha Jones of McGirr third. Nya Snikkers from Mountain View won the triple jump, outleaping teammate Amalie Kerridge and Erika Fay from Randerson Ridge. With throwing events for peewee girls, top three discus throwers were Urbanowicz from McGirr, and Quarterway entrants Maranda Eby and Anya Nickolet. In shot put, Elise Olson of McGirr was first, Katie Cornett from Ladysmith second, and Mya Creed of Quarterway third. Tops in the softball throw was Quarterway’s Eby, followed by Alicia Smith from Frank J. Ney, and Kianna Cooper of Park Avenue.
For bantam (born 2002-03) girls, a highlight was provided by Seaview runner Ella Ostrikoff, who set a new district record by winning the 100m in 13.28 seconds. Ostrikoff also was first in the 200m, and in field events won the long jump competition. Hammond Bay placed second in 100m and third in 400m, while Jami Hartwich from Pauline Haarer was third in 100m and second in 200. Third place in 200m went to Ecole Oceane’s Justine Henriques who was also first in the 400m. Quarterway athlete Kate Cameron was strong in the longer distances, winning both the 800m and 1500m as well as taking second in 400m. Second in both 800m and 1500m was Olivia Lundman from Seaview. Hammond Bay was third in 800m, while third in 1500m went to Julia Noon representing Ladysmith Intermediate.
In bantam girls’ field events, second and third in long jump were taken by Maybelline Mnguni of Rutherford and Jocelyn Maguire from Quarterway. Top three triple jumpers were Madison Paugh from Uplands Park, Cassidy Bodnar of McGirr, and Claire Krynowsky of Randerson Ridge. Paugh also was first in the discus throw, and third in shot put. Second and third in discus were Marie Johnson from Rutherford and Hammond Bay. Cinnabar Valley’s Paige Akagi was first in shot put, with Kiana Jepson of Mountain View second.

Athletes are on the fast track
Back to the track this week, as we continue our review of the recent Nanaimo District Elementary School Track and Field Championships. The focus this week is on top results from boys’ competition…
In the tyke (born 2006-07) division, Joe Madill from Cilaire was first in the 100-metre dash, followed by Quarterway’s Connor Laursen and Gavin Gunderson from Mountain View. Gunderson was the winner of the 200m, outracing Julian Wylie of Park Avenue and Sebastian Tutton of Rock City. Top three in the 400m race were Aidan Huggins from Uplands Park, Dylan Myhrer of Randerson Ridge and Kyle Veasey of Pleasant Valley. In both the 800m and 1,500m events the same three athletes took the top spots: Kynan Shurniak from Mountain View was first in both, with Bryce Dueck of Seaview second and Noah Jayawickreme from McGirr third.
With field events, Ronde Lyle from Cinnabar Valley was tops in long jump, Hammond Bay was second and Damian Fraser from Park Avenue third. Keane Taylor from Ladysmith Intermediate was first in softball throw, Boyd Anderson of MountainView placed second and Keenan deWit from Forest Park was third.
Turning to peewee (born 2004-05) events, Nate Paris from Hammond Bay was a triple winner, earning firsts in 100m, 200m and long jump. Teammate Spencer Brown was second in 200m and third in 100m. Second in 100m went to Max Holman from Rock City and third in 200m to Zach Henry of Pleasant Valley. Fastest runner in both 400m and 800m was Jayden Watson representing Cinnabar Valley. Luke Lavery from Cilaire and Jake Putz from Cinnabar were second and third in the 400m, while McGirr’s William Merrill and Mountain View’s Brett Merner were second and third in 800m. Top three in the 1,500m were Mountain View teammates Gus Johnson and Marcus Saywell, along with Jacob Putz from Cinnabar Valley.
Peewee boys’ field events saw Kevin Taylor from Uplands Park and Jake Herold of Randerson Ridge take second and third in long jump. Best in triple jump was James Rideout of Hammond Bay, followed by Adam Jacklin of Cilaire and Emmett Wymann from Ladysmith Intermediate. Luke Lavery from Cilaire won the shot put, with Rock City’s Louis Bernas second and Cilaire’s Owen Moore third. The discus event had Cole Dunn from Park Avenue first, Ben Martin of Pleasant Valley second and Dante Paziuk from Quarterway third. Ryker Pearson from Coal Tyee won the softball throw. McGirr’s William Merrill was second and Benson Sabourin from Rock City third.
Track events for bantam (born 2002-03) boys featured three titles for Sean Duquette from Forest Park, as he won the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Fairview entrant Colton Samaroo was second in 100m and third in 200m. Hammond Bay’s Jackson Ali took second in both 200m and 400m. Wyatt Cameron from North Cedar was third in 100m, while Stewart Stephen of Rutherford was third in 400m. Cinnabar Valley athlete Gage Zanette was a triple winner, claiming the 800m and 1,500m as well as the triple jump title. Edomiyas Demoline from Ladysmith and Austin Udle from Georgia Avenue were second and third in 800m, while Ladysmith’s Eric Gueldenstern and Jack Miller of Forest Park were second and third in 1,500m.
The top three long jumpers were Cam Whitcomb of Cilaire, Georgia Avenue’s Koby Williams and James Wakefield from Brechin, while second and third in triple jump went to Ben Bligh from Randerson Ridge and Oliver Carson of McGirr. Winner in shot put was Gueldenstern of Ladysmith. Ewan Ackroyd-Wipper from Pauline Haarer was second and Ethan Dugan of Cinnabar Valley third. The discus event went to Maeson Sawden from Rock City, with Christian Burdoch of Park Avenue second and Aiden Collery from Rutherford in third place.
Based on total points earned by all athletes, the top three small schools in the district meet were Cinnabar Valley, Seaview and Pauline Haarer, while the top three large schools were Hammond Bay, Mountain View and Quarterway.
