Red Hawks take peewee title

The Williams Lake Red Hawks calmed the Williams Lake Storm Sunday to take first place at the Peewee Hockey Tournament in the lakecity over the weekend.

The Williams Lake Red Hawks calmed the Williams Lake Storm Sunday to take first place at the Peewee Hockey Tournament in the lakecity over the weekend.

The two teams traded blows throughout the first two periods before Hunter Mennie put the Red Hawks up 4-3 heading into the final frame.

From there, the Red Hawks tallied three more unanswered goals from Lane Wycotte (2) and Maclean Busch to win the tournament final, 7-3.

Scoring for the Storm were Aiden Myhre (2) and Browdy Paterson.

The Storm’s path to the final consisted of a 6-5 win over the Lac la Hache Hornets and a 12-0 win over the Logan Lake Leafs before falling to Quesnel Black, 3-2.

Meanwhile, the Red Hawks downed the Kamloops Outlaws, 4-2, before beating Quesnel Green, 4-2. In its last round robin game the Red Hawks defeated Logan Lake, 11-1, to advance to the final.

The Kamloops Outlaws defeated Quesnel Black, 4-2, to claim the bronze.

Rounding out the tournament results were the Lac la Hache Hornets in fifth, the Williams Lake TNT — an all-girls team — in sixth, Quesnel Green in seventh, the Williams Lake Warriors in eighth, the Williams Lake Predators in ninth and the Logan Lake Leafs in 10th.

Heart and Hustle awards for the Red Hawks went to Mennie, Wycotte, James Bings and Ben Stafford. For the Storm it was Paterson, Paige Buller, Logan Ramsay and Myhre taking the honours.

The Most Sportsmanlike trophy went to Lac la Hache, with the Williams Lake TNT finishing second.

Tournament committee member Janet Stafford said all of the kids had a great time and the tournament ran smoothly.

“We had a lot of compliments from the out-of-town people and I think it was a good tournament,” she said.

“It was nice to see some Williams Lake teams win.”

Stafford added she’d like to thank the tournament committee of Paula Freeman, Audrey Waterhouse, Becky Bings, Stella Ramsay, Joanne Davies, Laura Storoschuk and the tournament director, Cindy Outhouse, for all of their work.
