A North Okanagan Soccer Association Women’s Masters Division match was postponed 45 minutes Tuesday night because the referee had a stroke on the field.
The 70-something-year-old veteran official looked disoriented when he dropped his whistle. He was walked off the field 41 minutes into the Rosters-Squires Four Pub game at MacDonald Park.
Rosters’ doctors Kate Ball and Denise Bateman were on the scene along with Rosters’ nurses Jen Funk and Felicia Musa.
“He was surrounded by women all lavishing him with attention and blankets,” said referee scheduler Michelle Hughes.
The referee was conscious when the ambulance arrived. On Wednesday afternoon, it was confirmed that he is in Vernon Jubilee Hospital undergoing tests.
Most Sportsmanlike Player went to Funk.
Rosters keeper Amanda Smiley went to emergency after she broke her ankle in the last few minutes.
Squires finished off the first round at 9-0, after a 2-0 win over Rosters.
In the first half, Jacquie Hansen sent Loren Brunelle down the left wing to put the floss crew up 1-0.
Marisa Weibe, the Sportswoman of the Match, sent a beautiful ball on the ground to the speedy Hansen to solidify the win.
Jill Rintoul, Andi King, Irene Arrotta, Loren Brunelle, Mari-Anne DeFoor and Marisa Weibe all showed great hustle on the half line to keep Rosters in check.
Impact gain scoreless draw
Across the field, Gray Monk Longhorn and Shuswap Merlot ran to a scoreless tie.
Goalkeeping duties were shared by Impact players after keeper Derri Cooper had an injury.
Chris Fraser swept any Merlot chances and Minda Chittenden tirelessly played in the middle of the park.
Player of the Game was Erin Fowlie who stepped up to play midfield, hustled for the ball and fed forwards Eddie Yamada and Stacy Cover.
The Chick Kickers shut out the Controllers 5-0 at Marshall Field #3.
The Controllers signed new forward Elena Sookarow, who put on a great display of skill and speed up front.
Angela Durfeld took control in the midfield deking and setting up plays all night. Durfeld, along with hard-working midfielders Tara Murray, Jessie Bicknell and Mandy Frederick, created many offensive opportunities with Durfeld just missing on a brilliant strike.
Center back Val Percy, Michele Wernicke and Jody Peshko had some great defensive plays to shut down the Kickers’ relentless offence.
Keeper and Player of the Match Michelle Embleton was kept busy and made several excellent saves on one-on-one challenges.
Kicksters’ Jenny Garnett, receiving a pass from Michelle Loxam, split the defence and slotted her fourth goal of the year.
A few minutes later, Heidi Holtman put away a corner from Jacobs. Kemper finished off a three-way-play from Sharon Storms and Mel Jacobs.
Player of the Game Tania Sladen and Loxam ran the wings all night. Keeper Robyn Sherwood preserved her fourth shutout with a magical dive, getting her fingers on a rocket.
Courtesy Motors Sista’s and VQA tied 2-2 Tuesday at Marshall Field #5.
After playing against strong winds in the first half the Sista’s were down 2-0.
The first goal came from a beautiful through ball from Andy Zubot to Diane Neudorf, who ran the ball, and beat VQA’s defence with a corker to the left corner.
Next goal came from an over-the-head kick from Neudorf, landing at the feet of Danny Moffat who ran hard with defence on her tail, finishing with a corker to the left corner.
Sista’s’ Most Sportsmanlike player was Nadine Danyluk for charging the ball and fine playmaking.
Moore pulls hat-trick for Newshounds
In a Division 1 match, Infonews Newshounds ambushed the Ball Blasters 10-3 with only seven players Tuesday night at Marshall Field #4.
Jenessa Moore pulled a hat trick and Kira Lee added a deuce. Singles went to Jen Knopp, Megan Prentice, Mary Bennett, Tessa Coulthard and Katelyn Dyck.
Megan Squair, Nicole Williams and Danielle Butler replied for the Newshounds.
The NET Celtics battled gale-force winds to sail to a 1-0 victory over the Kicksters Tuesday night at Marshall Field #1.
The play went back and forth when star-centre midfielder Emily Keeley sent a great lead pass to a full-speed Tori Reid who beat a defender taking the ball deep. Reid saw Keeley approaching the 18 and played a cross which Keeley struck hard on her first touch into the corner.
The Kicksters rallied hard creating several late chances in the game.
A Kicksters’ corner led to a scramble with the ball landing on the foot of a Kicksters attacker who struck the ball hard and low.
Jodi Bariesheff shined on the outside midfield, creating several offensive opportunities for the Celtics attack.
Veteran Debbie Henderson anticipated a defensive play and saved an inevitable goal by hammering the ball off the goal line.
