Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association is looking forward to stepping into the batter’s box for another season.
Registration is underway for the 2018 minor baseball season and it’s looking like the dugouts will be filled up again this year.
“We’re about halfway through. We’ve got just over 300 kids registered, with the expectation we’ll be through 600 again this year,” said Mike Holyk, minor baseball president. “I think we’re pretty good across the board. We’re seeing real good numbers at the younger ages, to the point where the number of coaches is a bigger issue.”
The NMBA has programs for T-ball players born in 2012-13 all the way up to midget-aged players born 2000-2002. The house-league season will give way to all-star ball as the summer progresses and Nanaimo will get to host bantam A provincials.
Another highlight will be a Honda Blue Jays Supercamp coming up in July, when Toronto Blue Jays alumni will come to the Harbour City to teach and inspire youngsters.
In other baseball news, a new non-profit society, the Serauxmen Stadium Amateur Baseball Association, has recently been formed since the City of Nanaimo has taken ownership of the stadium.
“The user groups and an independent board will be managing the stadium and working with the city to provide for annual maintenance and hopefully an exciting capital plan going forward to bring it back up to its former glory,” Holyk said.
Lorne Goodall is president of the new Serauxmen Stadium association.
Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association is holding registration days at Kirby’s Source for Sports this weekend and next. Parents can register their children Sunday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., or Feb. 24 from 10-3 p.m. and Feb. 25 from 10-2 p.m.
