When one thinks golf does literacy come to mind? Probably not.
However, on Sept. 24 it should.
That’s the day the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy, along with the help of Heartland Toyota, will hold its fifth annual Scramble for Literacy golf tournament — a main fundraiser for the organization’s programs.
The 18-hole tournament, held at the Williams Lake Golf and Tennis Club, is described as “fun.” It’s open to teams of four and individuals and costs $70 per person and $50 for juniors that includes a buffet dinner to follow the event.
Individuals who want to attend only the dinner at the event can purchase a ticket for $25.
Tournament chair Linda McDonald says there are currently 14 teams signed up; however, she would like to encourage more people to register to help reach the 20-team mark.
“Individuals can let the pro shop know they want to play and they’ll find a team for them,” McDonald says. “But the easiest way, the most fun way, is if you and three friends sign up together.”
The tournament features tons of prizes, including draw prizes and prizes for every participant. In addition, prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, long drive and closest to the line competitions on the course, as well as four hole-in-one holes featuring an $8,000 cruise vacation, a car and two $10,000 amounts.
“We would love to see someone win one of those,” McDonald says.
A vintage (blue and white) Montreal Canadiens jersey signed by Carey Price will also be up for auction.
Lil Mack with CCPL says the tournament helps to “support all the work we do in the community which includes partner-assisted learning, Books for Babies, and Bright Red Book Shelf.”
The funds raised, for example, help purchase new books for the organization’s book shelf program.
“In a nutshell, it’s about getting books in the community and into people’s hands,” Mack says of that program.
Funds raised at the event support the CCPL and stay in the community. The event will also feature a speaker who’s experienced success in overcoming a literacy challenge.
