The longest running gymkhana in British Columbia, which is operated by the Watch Lake/Green Lake Community Association, is slated for July 9.
It is being held at the Watch Lake/Green Lake Gymkhana Grounds, just west of the Little Horse Lodge and folks just have to follow the signage.
“I grew up with the gymkhana,” says Dimps Horn.
“Our family, along with many others, started it in the late ’50s, I believe.”
The gates open at 10 a.m., and all entries must be in before noon with events starting at noon, she adds.
The gymkhana is a horse-and-rider sporting event that includes pole bending, stake race, barrel race, keyhole race, and two of the following three events – ribbon race, baton race and musical tires.
The Watch Lake & District Women’s Institute and their volunteers will run the concession and serve hamburgers, hotdogs, pop and coffee, etc. The Watch Lake/North Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will sell ice cream cones, and there will be a refreshment garden on site.
“The grounds are in excellent shape,” Horn says, adding everyone is welcome to attend.
“It’s a beautiful setting, lots of shelter if the weather is too hot, or if it rains.”
Admission is $2 per person for folks seven years and older, while those six years and under are free. Another gymkhana is scheduled for Aug. 13 at the same location. For more information, call Horn at 250-456-7741.
