Revelstoke Grizzlies split games on southern road trip

Revelstoke Grizzlies top Princeton Posse 4-3, lose to Osoyoos Coyotes 5-4.

The Revelstoke Grizzlies split two very tight games on a southwest road trip last weekend. The Grizzlies picked up a 4-3 overtime win over the Princeton Posse on Friday before falling 5-4 in OT to the Osoyoos Coyotes on Saturday. On Friday, the Grizzlies traveled to Merritt to face the Posse, with the aim of snapping a four game losing streak. The game was held in Merritt after the ice plant at Princeton’s arena broke down before the game. It was the teams’ first meeting since a pair of games in September that had Princeton’s coach calling the Grizzlies “borderline dangerous.” It was the Posse that struck first, with Craig Thompson scoring a power play goal 4:05 into the first period. Raphael Bassot tied things up for the Grizzlies only 53 seconds later, with assists from Austin Thorne and Tyler Chavez Leech. Chavez Leech gave Revelstoke a 2-1 lead when he scored on the power play near the midway point of the second. The lead lasted less than a minute, when Owen Reith equalized the score for Princeton. The teams traded goals again in the third period, with Tristyn Olson scoring for the Posse and Nicholas Higgs tying things up for Revelstoke. That sent the game to overtime, where Thorne played the hero, scoring the winner with a 1:03 left in the first OT, with assists from Matthew Monk and Jon Vandermolen. Revelstoke outshot Princeton 39-23 in the game and Giovanni Sambrielaz made 20 saves in the win. Thorne was named the Grizzliesp player of the game. On Saturday, the Grizzlies made the trip to Osoyoos to face the Coyotes — the leaders of the Okanagan Division and one of the top teams in the KIJHL. The Grizzlies got off to a strong start, getting goals from Jacob Bourchier and Chavez Leech in the first period. The Coyotes stormed back in the second, with Austin Steger scoring twice on the power play and Hunter Johnson putting Osoyoos in front with 3:16 left in the frame. Tommy Bodtker tied the game for Revelstoke partway through the third, but Judd Repole restored Osyoos’ lead with 3:39 to go. The game was sent to overtime when Vandermolen scored with only 58 seconds left. The teams traded chances in OT, and it took until the dying seconds for the Coyotes to emerge with the win thanks to a goal from Daniel Stone. Revelstoke was outshot 56-35 in the game and Chris Wielenga was named Revelstoke’s first star for his efforts in net. The Grizzlies record now sits at 7-12-0-1. They sit in fourth place in the Doug Birks division, 10 points back of the Kamloops Storm and seven points up on the Sicamous Eagles, but with three games in hand on both teams. The Grizzlies have a key home-and-home series against the Eagles this weekend. On Friday the team’s face off in Sicamous, while on Saturday they rematch at the Forum.
