Last weekend, 22 Revelstoke Nordic skiers travelled the long road to Prince George to compete against the province’s top skiers at the second BC Cup of the season.

The threateningly low snow-pack meant that Caledonia Nordic race organizers had to worked diligently to ensure race-ready conditions. A technique change from classic to skate sprints was necessary due to limited snow making it difficult to set a track. Nevertheless, the icy, technical trails combined with frigid wind chill delivered a challenging and memorable experience for all.

Competitors raced the skate sprints on Saturday, with a morning qualifier and afternoon elimination heats. Top Revelstoke results included:

The majority of athletes will now prepare themselves to compete on home course at the upcoming weekend’s Okanagan Cup being held in Revelstoke. It is expected that more than 200 athletes will race the two-day event. While they will miss their local race, three Revelstoke junior girls, Alana, Beth and Elizabeth, are looking forward to beginning another adventure this week. The trio will cross the Atlantic for a 17-day journey competing in Europe with BC Ski Team. Stay tuned for more results from our hard-working athletes.

Revelstoke Nordic ski racers get a break from traveling this weekend and will have a chance to show their mettle on home turf. Okanagan Cup races 1 & 2 will happen right here in Revelstoke on February 11 and 12.

Races will feature a mass start classic event on Saturday morning with events kicking off at 11 a.m. On Sunday, racers will compete in an interval start skate skiing race starting at 10 a.m.

We expect to see outstanding performances in all age categories, with approximately 75 local skiers taking part, from five-year-old bunnies to 70-year-old masters skiers.

Organizers expect to see more than 250 skiers from both B.C. and Alberta competing.

Even more than in years past, there will be very limited parking at the event. The club is offering a free shuttle to alleviate parking issues. A 35-passenger bus has been arranged for back country skiers, Nordic racers, families, and the general public to use. Shuttles will depart from the Big Eddy Fuel depot on the half hour from 7–10:30 a.m. and from noon until the race ends.
