Ski season ends for Reynolds

With no mountain to call our own, it’s no surprise Reynolds secondary school’s ski and snowboard team is the only one of its kind in the South Island.

Their commitment, however, is a strong one, as the group of five winter athletes ended the school season with the Island Championships at Mount Washington last month.

Said coach Heather Benson, theirs is the only school competing in the Island Championships south of the Courtenay-Comox corridor.

Reynolds is led by national-calibre skier Elizabeth Durward (Grade 12), who won the senior girls division for the second straight year.

“Durward showed her exceptional talent,” Benson said.

Katarina Bush (Grade 10) competed in the senior girls skiing event with Durward, while Grade 10 rookie skier Alex Vos debuted in the boys division.

Reynolds’ team expanded this year with snowboarding, taking on Kate Siemens (Grade 11), who raced to fifth in the Island championships, and Shaun Hutchinson (Grade 10).

Durward is also a member of the Mt. Washington ski team where she trains every week. She moved on to the recent provincial and national championships. At the provincials in Kimberley Durward finished fifth out of 60 skiers in the all terrain and 28th in the giant slalom events. At the national championships in Alberta she raced against Canadian Team members, ranking 11th overall.
