The team of Gary Kirk from Richmond won the Provincial Men’s Triples Tournament that was hosted by the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club last week.
With teammates Gord Oikiwa and Peter Chong, they beat the Victoria trio of David Gardner, Ivo Van Bastelaere and Dennis Verge in the final.
Team Kirk was unbeaten heading to the final. All they needed to do was beat Team Gardner and the gold medal was theirs to take home.
But the Victoria trio, which had to play extra games to make it to the final, put up a stiff fight. They had to beat the unbeaten Kirk Trio twice to win the title. They won the first game and forced Team Kirk to play an extra game for the title.
After a closely contested match, Team Kirk wore down the Victoria squad to take the gold.
The organizers were quite pleased with the tournament which drew 12 teams from Vancouver Island and the Mainland.
“There was an excellent display of bowling from all the contestants,” said Mick Banks, who was one of the umpires. “The competition was well attended by spectators not only from the local area but also from the Mainland.”
Finishing with the bronze medals were Paul Lee, Sam Wong and Earl Luk of Richmond.
