The Ride to Conquer Cancer is coming to Chilliwack in 2018.
The B.C. Cancer Foundation has announced an all-B.C. route for next year that will see thousands of cyclists winding through the scenic Fraser Valley countryside on day one.
They’ll end up in Chilliwack where they’ll stay overnight. Then it’ll be on to day two, completing their journey with a 100 kilometre ride to Hope.
“As we embark on our 10th annual Ride to Conquer Cancer, the new all-BC route will allow us to connect with the communities, families and patients who are directly impacted by this powerful event,” said B.C. Cancer Foundation president and CEO Sarah Roth. “Cancer touches all of us and we are incredibly motivated by the open arms the city of Chilliwack has offered as we set forth planning for the Ride’s next chapter.”
“We are pleased that Chilliwack will be part of the route for the 2018 Ride to Conquer Cancer and hope that the natural beauty of the Fraser Valley will help inspire riders to push themselves during the long and challenging ride,” added Chilliwack mayor Sharon Gaetz. “We applaud the individuals that give of their time and physical abilities, as well as the people and organizations that give so generously to raise funds for cancer research.”
Chilliwack has traditionally had a strong presence in the Ride, thanks to people like Wayne Oberst.
Two weekends ago Oberst pedaled nearly 250 kilometres in the ninth annual Ride, cycling from Cloverdale to Seattle along with several friends and family members.
“After years of riding the route to Seattle, I am really looking forward to next year and doing the ride with thousands of others on scenic roads in my own backyard,” Oberst said.
Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised more than $85.3 million to advance care for people facing cancer in our province. Funds from the Ride go directly to support breakthroughs in cancer prevention, detection and treatment at the B.C. Cancer Agency’s six centres across the province.
