Riders pick up strong results at lakecity MCQMX stop

Athletes from throughout the province were in Williams Lake for the MCQMX Championship Series

Athletes from throughout the province were in Williams Lake during the weekend for the MCQMX Championship Series at the Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association Track.

And Williams Lake and area riders were among the top in their respective divisions, which ranged from four to six year olds riding 50cc bikes to a professional open class.

WLDRA director Brock Hoyer — who also happens to be the inaugural 2017 X Games snowbike gold medalist — said it was a great weekend of racing.

“It went really well,” he told the Tribune. “It’s been a mud pit up there the past couple of years we’ve hosted this so it was a welcome change.”

He said another race being held in the province cut down the number of riders this year, however, noted it was still a strong showing.

“Our local guys really showed up,” he said. “Worked out really well and there were no really bad crashes and everyone made it home safe and sound.”

One of the top local competitors was 13-year-old Marcus Deausy, who placed first in every class he competed in — Junior MX-2, Junior MX-3 and Schoolboy.

Hoyer’s protégé, he said Deausy is a “chip off the old block.”

“It’s great to see a rider I’ve been mentoring like that,” he said. “He’s really coming along and he’s going to do really well in the sport.”

Hoyer, meanwhile, said it was his first time racing on a track this year and he managed to pick up first place in the Open Pro Am division and the Under 30 division.

He’s planning on attending the upcoming Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals series event at Whispering Pines Raceway in Kamloops Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4.

“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I’d like to say I’m going to the pro race Sunday but I’m not sure yet. I’m focused on the winter (and snowbiking) and don’t want to get hurt so I might just race on the Saturday in the amateur race, but if you do that you can’t race on Sunday in the pro event.”

He added a special shout out to WLDRA president TJ Frizzi for all his hard work helping organize the event, and to all the sponsors who helped support it.

The MCQMX Championship Series will return to Williams Lake Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6 for the North versus South Round 7.
