“Big performances were put on by Paul Stanfield, Dustin Fletcher and Julian Benvenuti. But with that said, everyone performed at an exceptional level,” said Sam McCullough, president of Bruins RFC.

Rookie Calvin Rypkema scored a try in his opening game with the Bruins.

McCullough was impressed by the team’s intensity and aggressiveness in contact.

“It was clear by the end of the game that Surrey was apprehensive to play hard-nosed rugby with us, which bodes well for the rest of our season,” he said.

The next game for the Bruins will be Saturday, Oct. 15, when they host Squamish.

The Bruins women were on the road, and the second division side also won, beating United 31-7 in New Westminster on Saturday.
